Steve is an Aboriginal man from the Yuin Nation on the South Coast of NSW, and grew up in the Aboriginal community of La Perouse.
In 2012, he was inducted into the National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Honour Roll, and in 2013, he received the First Peoples award at the Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs (APSAD) conference in Brisbane.
Steve’s contributions extend to academia and research. He has previously lectured at Sydney University as an Adjunct lecturer and co-authored a handbook for Aboriginal Alcohol and Drug Work. Additionally, he is an Associate Investigator with the Centre of Research Excellence-Indigenous Health and Alcohol Research.
An active member of the NSW Health Aboriginal Directors and Managers Strategic Leadership Group, Steve’s work reflects his commitment to improving health and wellbeing in the Aboriginal community. His efforts and achievements have left a significant impact in the fields of health, education and research within Aboriginal culture.
Outside the community health sector, Steve also had a distinguished ten-year career as an Australian former rugby league footballer. Known on the field as “The Zip-Zip Man”, Steve played for the Parramatta Eels, playing in every position in the backline. Steve was a key part of four Premiership-winning sides at Parramatta in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1986!
