It was important for us to ensure that this year’s NAIDOC week was both meaningful, and memorable. Steve shared his experience, reflecting on the event’s significance, and the critical role it played in reconnecting individuals with their culture.

Coming together to embrace our traditions

NAIDOC Week 2023 marked a significant return for the Aboriginal people on the Central Coast, especially after years of cancellations because of COVID-19 and natural disasters. This year’s event was more than a gathering; it was a symbol of the community’s resilience, unity and cultural pride. Steve, who played a crucial role in organising the community event, underscored the importance of NAIDOC Week, saying:

“This year was significant because we had cancellations through COVID, and then we had last year we had cancellations through floods. So, this is the first time in four years we’ve been able to run the event.”

Community stalls allowed local services to display what they offer, giving information about support and resources available. Health check areas were set up, manned by healthcare professionals offering screenings and connections to general practitioners if needed.

The event also focused on children, with activities that actively taught them about healthy eating, but in a fun and interactive way. On top of that, rides and games were set up to ensure the kids were entertained.

With an attendance of 2,000 to 3,000 people, the event’s popularity was clear, and it showed how pivotal it is to the Central Coast Aboriginal people.

The Elders’ area was a special part of the event, offering them a hot meal, along with activities like bingo, and personalised care from volunteers.

“The Elders’ area at this year’s NAIDOC Week was a heartfelt addition. It was our way of honouring the wisdom and guidance our Elders have provided us. Sharing a hot meal, playing bingo, and engaging in conversations with them is more than a tradition; it’s a reminder of our roots and the strong bonds that sustain us. Their happiness and comfort were a priority for us, and seeing them enjoy the event was a deeply rewarding experience.”

The sense of unity was further deepened with the provision of free food to all attendees. This gesture transformed a gathering into a familial feast, embodying the communal ethos.

2023 reflections

Steve’s reflections on NAIDOC Week 2023 not only celebrate a special event for Aboriginal people, but also provide a glimpse into his commitment to promoting cultural identity and well-being.

Through partnerships, education, and passion, NAIDOC Week 2023 was a manifestation of community strength and cultural connection. It stands as a testimony to the resilience of the Aboriginal people, forging a path towards a future filled with understanding, unity, and cultural pride.

As Steve concluded, the success of this year’s event symbolised more than just a gathering; it marked a renewal of spirit, a rekindling of cultural bonds, and a reminder that community and identity are vital elements in our lives.
